Symmetrical Triangle
NeutralReliability: MediumAlso called · coil, convergence
Highs fall and lows rise, converging on a point.
How to spot it
- The upper and lower trendlines are close to symmetric
- Volume dries up towards the apex
Why this shape forms
Highs fall, lows rise, and everything squeezes toward a point. Both sides lost conviction, which is exactly why the shape predicts no direction at all.
Where it actually means something
It appears inside trends and inside ranges alike. That is why the shape carries little information and the breakout carries all of it.
What else to check
The breakout candle needs volume clearly above the average of the coil. Quiet breakouts get retraced at a high rate.
This means you're wrong
If it reaches the apex without breaking out, it loses meaning as a signal.
The mistake beginners make
Deciding the direction in advance. This pattern only says "a big move is coming", not which way.
Easy to confuse with
Breaks that come after the coil has fully tightened are more often false. Earlier breaks, before the apex, tend to be cleaner.
