Moving Average — how far to trust it, and where to fold

What Moving Average is

The average price of N candles. You read trend direction and dynamic support/resistance.

It also goes by MA, golden cross, death cross.

What you actually look at

  • Short average above long average is bullish alignment
  • Below is bearish alignment

When to admit you were wrong

If price crosses back and forth frequently, it's a range and the signal isn't usable.

Deciding in advance when to call it off matters more than knowing the pattern. That level is also where your stop belongs. An analysis without an invalidation never finds out it was wrong.

The mistake beginners make

Entering on the golden cross. It's a lagging indicator, so the signal arrives after the move.

Try it yourself

The chart above is a real 4-hour stretch of ETH/USDT. The blue line sits at the level this pattern hinges on. Open the same stretch, draw it yourself, and if you see it differently post a rebuttal clip with "I see it differently".

Is chart-only always right? With a big announcement scheduled, Moving Average and everything else gets flattened in one move. I check the calendar first.

Half agree with the post above. But "you only see it afterwards" is a price-only problem. Moving Average only means something if volume shows up while the shape completes, and that part you can see live. If the shape is there and volume is dead, I do not buy it.

Disagreement here is normal. What matters is whether you wrote your own rule down beforehand. I keep a document for Moving Average that says "under these conditions I take it, under these I do not", and I do not edit it during the session.

Beginner question, sorry — there are so many shapes that look almost like Moving Average that I keep mixing them up. If you had to name the one thing that decides it, what would it be?

To answer the beginner above — I fix "If price crosses back and forth frequently, it's a range and the signal isn't usable." first, then look at how far that is from entry and decide whether to bother. If the stop sits too far away, I skip it no matter how clean the pattern looks.

If you ask why Moving Average repeats at all, it is because people behave similarly. The level where trapped buyers get out flat, the level where people who missed it chase — that is what draws the shape. So I try to imagine why the shape formed first.

Stretch the time axis and there is less to decide; less to decide means fewer mistakes. I think that is a count problem, not a skill problem.
